The nasal turbinates are small, curved bony structures lined with mucous membrane that project into the nasal passages on both sides of the nose. There are three pairs — the inferior, middle and superior turbinates — with the inferior turbinate being the largest and most clinically significant. Turbinoplasty involves Five precise steps:
- Anaesthesia — Turbinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia. You are completely asleep and feel nothing throughout the procedure.

What to Expect After TURBINOPLASTY
Timeline:
Day 1-2 — Immediately after surgery
Your nose will feel very blocked and congested immediately after surgery due to post-operative swelling and any packing placed. This is completely normal and expected — it does not mean the surgery has not worked. You may have some bloody nasal discharge or light bleeding in the first day or two. Rest at home, keep your head elevated and begin nasal saline spray as directed.
Days 3-7 — First week
Patients typically experience congestion, crusting and mild nasal discomfort in the first one to two weeks. Swelling gradually reduces and you may begin to notice some improvement in nasal breathing during this period. Use nasal saline spray regularly to keep the nasal passages moist and clear of crusting. Week 2 — Improvement continues

Long-term — Maintaining results

Post-Operative Bleeding
The most common complication of nasal surgery. Most post-operative bleeding is minor and settles with simple pressure or nasal packing. Significant bleeding requiring further intervention is uncommon. Avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen and blood thinners before and after surgery significantly reduces bleeding risk.

Crusting and Temporary Congestion
Mild-to-moderate oedema with subsequent nasal obstruction and thick mucus formation is expected in the first one to two weeks after surgery. Regular nasal saline spray and attendance at post-operative follow-up appointments minimises crusting and supports optimal healing.

Adhesions
Scar tissue (synechiae) may form between the turbinate and the septum. Adhesions can cause nasal obstruction if they are significant. They are detected at post-operative nasal endoscopy and can usually be divided under local anaesthesia in the outpatient setting if required.
